What Is Margin In Trading?

Margin, trading-wise, refers to the amount of cash or collateral that one must deposit to open and maintain a trading position. It allows you to hold larger positions with less initial capital, so it's a key concept in leveraged trading strategies.

At Excent Capital, we believe that understanding margin is essential for smart and profitable trading. Whether you're trading FX on margin, exploring crypto opportunities, or engaging with other financial instruments, a solid grasp of margin empowers you to make informed and strategic decisions.

How Does Margin Trading Work?

In trading, margin refers to the amount of capital a trader must deposit with a broker to open and maintain a position. This deposit acts as a financial commitment, ensuring the trader can cover any potential losses.

Leverage works hand-in-hand with margin.

It allows traders to control larger positions than their actual capital would permit. For example, with 1:10 leverage, a trader can control a $10,000 position with just $1,000 in margin.

The margin requirement is typically expressed as a percentage, representing the ratio of required margin to the total value of the position.

For example, a 2% margin requirement on a $100,000 trade means the trader needs to deposit only $2,000 to open and maintain the position. This provides you with a greater exposure to the market with less capital requirements.

Margin trading with leverage is commonly used in markets such as FX, cryptocurrency, and commodities, offering traders increased exposure and flexibility. It enhances the potential for greater profits, as outcomes are calculated on the full position size, not just the margin.

This also means that market movements, both favourable and unfavourable, have a larger impact on your overall results, making it important to approach each trade with a clear strategy and awareness.

Trading With Margin At Excent Capital

At Excent Capital, margin trading is available across a wide range of asset classes, giving you more flexibility and control over your investments:

Cryptocurrencies:

Stocks & Indices:

ETF’s:

Exchange Traded Funds with margin to amplify your returns, all tailored to different profiles.

Commodities:

Take advantage of price movements in key commodities like gold, oil, silver, and natural gas. Access global commodity markets efficiently, with competitive spreads and risk control tools.

What Is A Margin Call In Trading?

A margin call occurs when a trader’s account equity falls below the maintenance margin requirement, the minimum amount of capital needed to keep positions open.

This typically happens when active trades move unfavorably, reducing the account’s available margin. When the margin level drops below the required threshold, Excent Capital issues a margin call, asking the trader to deposit additional funds or close positions to restore sufficient equity.

Margin calls are a risk management mechanism designed to protect traders from incurring larger losses than their account can support.

At Excent Capital, the margin call level is set at 100%. This means that when your account equity equals your required margin, for example, USD 10,000 in equity and USD 10,000 in required margin, you’ll receive an email notification informing you that your available margin has been fully utilized.

At this stage:

You’ll temporarily be unable to open new positions;

No positions will be closed automatically — this only happens if your account reaches the stop-out level.

The margin call is a proactive risk management signal, giving you the opportunity to review your open positions, adjust your strategy, or add funds if needed. It's designed to help you stay in control and protect your trading account before reaching critical levels.

Manage Risk With Margin Awareness

When trading on margin, you need to monitor your positions and free margin. Sudden market fluctuations can reduce your equity and trigger a margin call order, that being a request to contribute additional funds to cover open positions or close some of the currently open ones. Failure to meet a margin call can lead to automatic closing of positions, known as stop-out.

At Excent Capital, we help you stay ahead with:

Transparent margin requirements for all assets;

Real-time margin monitoring tools to track your equity and free margin;

Instant alerts and notifications to help you manage your account.

Our platform equips traders with the tools and knowledge needed to manage their margin on positions with confidence.

Start trading smarter with Excent Capital, where risk management and margin awareness go hand-in-hand with opportunity.
